Aleister Crowley: Family man?
Tobias Churton’s definitive biography of Aleister Crowley, one of the most divisive figures of our time, is released this month and below Tobias tells of one of the key areas that Aleister Crowley: The Biography goes where few biographies of The Beast have gone before:
‘Biographers generally have paid little attention to Crowley’s children, the impression being thus given that neither did he. Well, I had much to learn, and much of what I learned came from getting into contact with Crowley’s grandson, the stunning jazz musician, Eric Muhler, who lives on America’s West Coast. His mother is Astarte Lulu, Crowley’s daughter from his relationship with Ninette Shumway, and she has passed on to Eric some extraordinary stories about life at Cefalu after Crowley was expelled by order of Mussolini in 1923. Lulu’s mother lived into her eighties and even in old age could still recite The Book of the Law from memory. Crowley’s was quite a family. How he lost contact with them is a painful story to tell; not all wounds appear to have been healed by time.’
